From 2007-2014, the state heritage listed Fletcher Jones Pleasant Hill site in Warrnambool deteriorated almost beyond repair.
During those dark years, a small band of volunteers kept the famous gardens alive. Lex Caldwell led the volunteer effort. He had maintained the gardens for owner, Ian Ballis of Mill Markets and when that business went into receivership in 2012, the site was left in limbo. Lex however continued working to maintain the gardens. Up until his retirement, Lex was head gardener under new owner Dean Montgomery.
In recent years, TAFE Horticulture students have joined the small band of community volunteers in helping to maintain the gardens with a series of part time gardeners leading and directing these efforts. Many people comment now on how great the gardens look again. Thank you to everyone who has contributed over the years in a voluntary capacity to keeping the gardens alive for our community enjoyment.
